Do you treat children?

Dental health is critical for kids of all shapes and sizes. Paying close attention to your child’s dental health ensures they have healthy, strong teeth as they age. Ignoring your child’s dental health, however, can lead to a long list of dental issues throughout your child’s life. However, many children are afraid to go to the dentist. We want to end this apprehension and fear and we want all of our patients to feel comfortable about coming to see us. Dr. Davis puts kids at ease with his funny jokes, while he and the entire staff provide gentle and pain-free care.  When our younger patients enjoy coming into our office, we are able to establish a relationship that will last well into adulthood.

Early dental examinations allow us to learn about our young patients' dental conformation so we can follow the growth and maturation of their teeth and gums. This familiarity allows us to anticipate issues before they become problems and monitor their growth and development. We love to watch our littlest patients grow and we are always honored to be included in their lives.

What is the difference between implants and dentures?

When you need to replace one or more missing teeth, you have a few options with Cleburne Dental Care, including dentures and implants. Choosing the right solution depends on several factors, such as price, preference, and the health of your jawbone and remaining teeth. Dental implants and dentures can help restore confidence in your smile and keep your mouth healthy.

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots, which are used to substitute original tooth roots – they are more permanent in nature. Whereas, dentures are merely a substitution for missing teeth, which a person can take out and put back in the mouth, whenever. A dental implant is fixed in its position. It acts as a natural tooth; therefore, it is not needed to take out the implant from mouth, specifically for cleaning. This protects the surrounding teeth from any unnecessary damage.

Permanent dentures are dentures that are held in place by two or more dental implants. These dental implants are surgically placed in the jawbone, allowing the dentures to look, feel, and act like normal teeth. A denture is required to be taken out of the mouth (and then placed back) for cleaning and maintenance purposes. This movement of dentures in an out of the mouth can result in wearing out of the adjoining natural teeth. There are no permanent dentures that are just used to replace one or two teeth. Permanent dentures are an “all or nothing” treatment.

What should I do if I have a dental emergency?

If you have a dental emergency, you should call Cleburne Dental Care immediately and plan to come into the office. When you experience a dental problem or oral injury, it's important to know if you need emergency dental care and if your dental plan covers you. Not all dental problems are emergencies. A tooth falling out, a toothache, a chipped tooth, or pain from a dental crown could be serious dental problems, but not necessarily emergencies, so it's best to consider your options in advance.

Things like a bad toothache, an injury in which a tooth or teeth have been knocked out, a tooth abscess that's infected are a few examples of some possible dental emergencies. Dental emergencies do not simply go away and are often exacerbated when patients wait to address them.  Pain and swelling and not normal and they indicate that there is a more serious problem that should be addressed immediately.

Don’t wait if you feel something is not right in your mouth. Let us address your problem before it becomes something more painful and expensive. Talk to Dr. Davis whenever you have dental pain, suffer an injury or trauma to your mouth that includes broken or missing teeth, cuts and other damage.

If one or more teeth have been dislodged, you should contact us immediately. You can take the following steps for saving and preserving the teeth:

  • Put teeth in milk
  • Pack a tooth socket—where the tooth came out in your mouth—with gauze, a cotton ball, or even a tea bag
  • For chipped and broken teeth, rinse and save the pieces, if possible

Why do I have to have dental x-rays taken?

X-rays tell us about what is happening in the places we can’t see. They help us see inside, behind, and between your teeth and are instrumental in helping to keep your teeth healthy. X-rays allow Dr. Davis to look past the tissue of your mouth, such as your gums, and into the deeper areas of your teeth and jaw bone. This allows us to look for signs of oral health issues that may be invisible with a visual examination alone.

At Cleburne Dental Care, we use digital x-rays to minimize exposure to radiation and to allow us to see images immediately on the computer screen. We love to share these images with our patients in real-time to help them understand what is happening inside their mouths. Digital x-ray images are a great way for us to share information and teach our patients about the health of their teeth and gums.

If you are having any kind of dental procedure like a root canal, dental implant, or even a filling, in some cases, additional diagnostic x-rays may be required to image the tooth and the surrounding areas, and plan your treatment accordingly.  We are happy to talk to you about how digital x-rays complement your overall dental and oral health.

What can I do to improve my home dental care?

Although it is important to visit a dentist regularly, it is as important to care for your teeth at home. Routine dental care will help to keep your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy; it will also make your trips to the dentist more comfortable and productive. To maintain your oral and dental care, you should:

Use the right toothbrush
Use a quality toothbrush that has soft bristles and fits comfortably in your mouth.  Make sure to replace your toothbrush every three months, or when the bristles show wear. There are a variety of toothbrush options out there, but soft-bristled and electronic toothbrushes are the best options to keep your smile bright and clean. Both of these choices allow for the gentle cleansing on your teeth without inflicting hard scrubbing and possible long-term damage such as receding gums and enamel loss.

Floss at least once a day
Flossing is the best way to remove plaque in places where your brush just can’t reach. The plaque that is between your teeth leads to tooth decay and gum disease. Brushing provides 50% of the daily cleaning your teeth need. Flossing does the rest.  Flossing at least once a day before bedtime or after each meal helps to keep your gums healthy and prevent cavities from forming. If you experience bleeding when flossing, you may have gingivitis or poor gum health. Not to worry, the more you floss the better your gum health will be, decreasing your bloody gums over time.

Give your tongue some attention
Your tongue, like your teeth and gums, can play host to a variety of bacteria if left uncleaned. To kick these bacteria to the curb, consider purchasing a tongue scraper, or a toothbrush with a scraper on the back. This small accessory will help you remove bacteria and improve your breath. The move in-depth your hygiene routine, the cleaner your mouth will be.

Drink water and Eat Healthy
Mouth dryness increases biofilm (plaque) accumulation and your risk for both tooth decay and periodontal disease. Drinking plenty of water and keeping well hydrated has a number of health benefits for your entire body, especially for your mouth. Water keeps sensitive tissues moist, and promotes the healthful action of saliva, which aids digestion, fights germs, and prevents tooth decay. “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” isn’t just used by pediatricians. Dentists recommend eating an apple a day because chewing apples can help you clean your teeth and avoid cavities, all while also taking the edge off of your sweet tooth. Crunchier vegetables like carrots and celery also help keep your gums stimulated fighting cavities. In general, a nutritious diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, grains, chicken and fish (especially organic) will aid in not just your dental health, but your overall health.

Visit the dentist regularly
We often find that many patients only visit us when there is something wrong, but some of the most vital parts of your dental health care routine x-rays and regular cleanings. Preventive care can help find minor issues before they become significant. Not only that, but it also helps you build up a comfortable and trustworthy dentist/patient relationship. The more you trust your dentist, the easier it will be to discuss your worries and fears, leading to a more enjoyable experience.
